The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a critical three-day weather alert, covering Monday to Wednesday (August 11–13, 2025), predicting widespread thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and heightened flood risk across the nation.

The high-impact outlook was released from NiMet’s Abuja office, urging full preparedness from all regions.

Northern Nigeria: Expect morning thunderstorms on Monday over Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba. The afternoon brings moderate rain and further storm activity across Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa. Elevated flood risks are projected for Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto.

Central Nigeria: Light morning rains are forecast for parts of Niger State. The afternoon will introduce thunderstorms in the FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, and Kogi. Areas of Niger, Plateau, and Nasarawa face significant flood risks.

Southern Nigeria: Morning clouds and intermittent light showers expected in Ebonyi, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. By afternoon, moderate rain should spread to Enugu, Edo, Ekiti, Osun, Abia, Rivers, Delta, and others. Delta, Imo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states have elevated flood probability.

With the nation still recovering from the catastrophic Mokwa flood (May 2025), which claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands, this forecast underscores the urgency of preparedness.

Nigeria’s rainy season is reaching a critical phase. With heavy downpours and storm systems on the horizon, being prepared is the best defense against repeating the tragedies of earlier floods.
