UNIMAID Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aliyu Shugaba welcomed the decision. “This honors our institution’s history,” he stated. The university will retain all academic programs and structures.

Opposition groups criticized the timing. “Policy matters need more attention than renaming,” said PDP spokesman Debo Ologunagba.
Some students protested, demanding infrastructure upgrades instead.

Buhari’s family expressed gratitude. “Education was his passion,” said spokesman Garba Shehu.

Implementation begins immediately:

  • New signage installation
  • Updated academic documents
  • Graduation certificates reflecting change

As Tinubu renames university, historians note this continues Nigeria’s tradition of honoring leaders through educational institutions. The change takes effect in the 2025/2026 academic session.
