Argungu fishing festival’s biggest catch weighs 59kg
The 61st Argungu International Fishing Festival officially began on Saturday at Mata Fada in Argungu town, Kebbi State, with the festival’s largest catch weighing 59 kilograms.
The Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, revealed the record in a statement on Saturday afternoon, highlighting the impressive scale of this year’s competition.
“61st Argungu fishing festival, biggest fish caught 59Kg,” Dare said.
The festival, which draws thousands of fishermen, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond, saw excitement reach a peak as large numbers of the expected 40,000 participants surged into the river just minutes after noon, even before the formal opening ceremony and the arrival of President Bola Tinubu.
Woman killed by hit-and-run driver in Lagos
A female pedestrian and member of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries was fatally struck by a Mercedes-Benz C-300 driver in a hit-and-run incident on Saturday at the NYSC Bus Stop, Igando area of Lagos State.
As reported by Vanguard, the victim was reportedly on her way to a worship service at MFM Church, Igando, when the accident occurred.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said its personnel responded swiftly.“
Upon receipt of distress alerts, LASTMA personnel stationed along the Igando axis responded with commendable alacrity and operational proficiency.
“Demonstrating tactical coordination and adherence to established emergency response protocols, the officers promptly cordoned off the accident scene to forestall secondary collisions and ensure the safety of other road users,” the statement read.
Remi Tinubu visits Saraki over father-in-law’s death
Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Saturday said the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, paid a condolence visit to his family following the death of his father-in-law, Otunba Adekunle Ojora.Saraki disclosed this in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He noted that the First Lady visited to offer her sympathies as the family continues to receive mourners.
He said,
“As we continue to receive condolence visits, today, my family and I were honoured to receive the First Lady, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who visited to offer her sympathies on the passing of my father-in-law, Otunba Adekunle Ojora.”
Saraki thanked individuals who had reached out to the family through prayers, messages and visits, describing the gestures as strong sources of support.
Many feared dead as bandits attack Niger communities
Suspected bandits on 14th February attacked communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, killing many people and abducting several others, while setting multiple houses ablaze, including a police station.
According to the punch, the first attack occurred in Tunga-Makeri on Friday, where bandits killed six residents and set homes on fire.
The assailants reportedly moved to Paso on Saturday after encountering little resistance from security forces, burning more houses and a police station.
An eyewitness, Mohammed Ibrahim, said,
“They moved to another village called Pisa again to carry out another operation. Seven people have been slaughtered by the bandits in Konkoso.
This is how they destroyed the Pissa police outpost. So far, 26 deaths have been recorded in the Konkoso bandit attack.”
DELSU matriculates 9,498 students
Delta University, Abraka, on Saturday matriculated a total of 9,498 students for its 2025/2026 academic session, with emphasis on improved capacity building as well as intellectual and manpower development.
Speaking while administering the matriculation oath to the freshers at the University’s main campus in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Asagba, said the students were “among the tens of thousands of candidates who applied for admission into the university.”
“I congratulate you for not only attaining another milestone in your academic pursuit, but for successfully scaling through the difficult hurdles of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Post-University Matriculation Screening exercise,” he said.
This was the second matriculation exercise Prof. Asagba presided over since assuming office on December 2, 2024, as the eighth substantive Vice Chancellor of the university.
Edo Police Command vows to rescue kidnapped officer, others
Commissioner of Police, Edo State Police Command, Monday Agbonika, has assured that the police officer, kidnapped alongside his daughter on February 8 in Auchi, will both be rescued.
Agbonika stated this while briefing journalists at the State Command Office in Benin City on the activities of the Command.
He assured that the two other victims abducted in Makeke in Akoko Edo Local Government Area on the same day would also be rescued.
“Rescue efforts are ongoing and we will not be able to tell you the details but like in other cases, technology has been deployed to secure his release and that of his daughter.
Those that were also kidnapped in Makeke will also be rescued,” Agbonika said on Friday.
Police bust illegal morgue, recover eight bodies in Cross River
The Cross River State Police Command has uncovered an illegal mortuary in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, where eight decomposed bodies were recovered.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, the Command confirmed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the discovery.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is attached to a company operating in the area.
According to the statement, the discovery followed credible information regarding the presence of corpses at a local embalming hall in Isong Inyang Community along the Calabar Ikom Highway on February 13, 2026.
Tinubu reaffirms commitment to South-East development
President Bola Tinubu says his administration will continue to develop critical infrastructure and partner with state governments in the South-East to advance the region’s strategic interests.

Kaduna Group responds to El-Rufai’s arrest claims, calls for due process
A Kaduna-based advocacy organisation, Kaduna-Scribe, has responded to recent comments by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai regarding alleged arbitrary arrests, urging that all security matters be handled through due process and established legal procedures.
In a statement issued Friday and signed by its National Chairman, Ezekiel Gambo, the group said the former governor’s remarks had generated public discussion about governance, civil liberties, and institutional accountability in the state.
El-Rufai had earlier expressed concern over what he described as arbitrary arrests by the current administration.
Kaduna-Scribe noted that such concerns highlight the importance of safeguarding the rule of law while allowing security agencies to carry out their duties within constitutional limits.
FG to strengthen food, nutrition security through bio-fortified crops
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening food and nutrition security through expanded adoption of bio-fortified crops across the country.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Marcus Olaniyi Ogunbiyi, stated this at a national biofortification workshop in Kano on Saturday.
“Ensuring food availability alone is no longer sufficient,” he noted.
He stressed the need to ensure that food consumed by Nigerians was nutritious, safe, affordable and accessible.
He noted that malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies remained major public health and economic challenges in the country.
