After Stumbling And Falling In Turkiye, Presidency Claims President Tinubu Is In ‘Great Shape’

The Nigerian Presidency has stated that President Bola Tinubu is in good health and continues to carry out his official duties in Türkiye, following an incident in which he stumbled and fell during a reception parade on his state visit.

The reassurance was given by one of Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to the President, in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday.

“President Tinubu in Great Shape as state visit proceeds smoothly,” Dare posted on Tuesday evening.

President Tinubu after a stately welcome ceremony in Ankara proceeded to scheduled bilateral meetings with President of Turkey and other senior government officials from both countries,” he added in post shared alongside photographs from the event.

Investigation uncovers Col who plotted Tinubu’s ouster

An interim investigation report into the alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s government has revealed that a clandestine network of military officers coordinated by an Army Colonel (name withheld) had planned the takeover, with funding, recruitment, and operational planning traced directly to him.

The report, sighted by The PUNCH on Tuesday, indicated that the Army officer, whose repeated failures in promotion reportedly fuelled his disaffection, mobilised like-minded officers across the Army, Navy, and Air Force, assigning them to survey critical national installations, including the Presidential Villa, major barracks, and international airports.

In October 2025, the DHQ announced the arrest of 16 officers over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.

Tinubu proposes 110 Court of Appeal justices

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve a bill seeking to amend the Court of Appeal Act to increase the number of justices from 70 to 110, as part of reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s appellate justice system.

The request was conveyed in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and read at plenary on Tuesday.

According to the President, the proposed amendments are intended to enhance the institutional capacity, efficiency and effectiveness of the Court of Appeal in line with constitutional provisions and emerging realities within the justice sector.

He said the central feature of the bill is the expansion of the court’s bench to cope with rising caseloads and operational pressures.

World Bank offers $250bn procurement window to Nigerian firms

The World Bank has offered a $250 billion global procurement window to Nigerian firms, urging local companies to take advantage of thousands of opportunities across World Bank–financed projects worldwide.

Speaking at a World Bank procurement seminar in Lagos, the Vice President, Operations Policy and Country Services (OPCS), Ms. Gallina Andronova Vincelette, said the scale of opportunities available to Nigerian businesses was “significant and growing.”

“To understand the scope of procurement, I will focus on the public sector,” Vincelette said.

On this slide, we see a couple of numbers. One is $250 billion.

This is what has been approved by our Board and is available to be delivered in projects and financing to governments across the world.

Kebbi trains 500 vigilantes to strengthen community security

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, on Tuesday inspected 500 vigilantes and hunters undergoing a refresher tactical training programme in Kalgo Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening grassroots security structures.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to complement conventional security agencies in responding to growing security challenges across the North-West, where communities have faced banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping in recent years.

Governor Idris said the programme became necessary as federal security formations remain overstretched.

“Existing security agencies in Kebbi are overstretched.

Trained vigilantes must now support them,” he said, urging the participants to swiftly assist in operations once deployed to their communities.

Osun Community Lacks Functional Health Centre As Ilemowu Facility Remains Abandoned

Residents of Ilemowu community in the Olaoluwa Local Government Area of Osun State are without a functional primary healthcare facility following years of neglect of the only centre serving the area.

The Primary Healthcare Centre, which caters to thousands of residents, has deteriorated significantly, with parts of the structure reportedly collapsed, leaving the community without access to basic medical services.

The prolonged neglect has persisted despite repeated complaints by residents to relevant authorities at both local and state levels.

Describing the impact of the situation on daily life in the community, the civic technology platform, Monitng, stated:

“Today, residents including pregnant women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities are forced to travel long distances to neighboring communities to seek medical care, exposing them to avoidable risks and additional financial burdens.”

Highlighting the physical condition of the facility, the platform further noted:

“The situation is alarming. Roofing sheets are missing, walls are cracked, doors and windows are destroyed, there are no healthcare workers on site, and no functional medical equipment.”

FG deploys military retirees to secure ungoverned spaces

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to deploy military veterans to help secure Nigeria’s ungoverned spaces as part of strategies to strengthen national security and drive economic activities in conflict-affected areas.

This followed the inauguration of an 18-member committee by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), tasked with reclaiming ungoverned spaces for economic viability and repositioning the Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires and Veterans.

A statement on Wednesday by the Ministry’s Deputy Director of Information, Enderline Chukwu unbehalf of the Director Information and Public Relations, said the committee was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Ministry of Defence headquarters, Abuja, with the minister represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Richard Pheelangwa.

Speaking at the event, Musa said the deployment of veterans into ungoverned spaces would complement ongoing military operations by bringing experienced personnel into local security and development efforts, particularly in areas where state presence remains weak.

Dollar to Naira exchange rate today, January 28, 2026

The Nigerian Naira maintained its positive momentum against the United States Dollar during the mid-week trading session on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

The local currency reached a significant milestone in the official market, continuing the trend of appreciation observed since the beginning of the week.

In the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the Naira strengthened to a record level, with the exchange rate settling at approximately 1,400.66 per dollar.

This followed a previous session where the currency had already made substantial gains, closing at 1,401.22.

NDIC, EFCC to enhance prosecution of bank failure offences

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have agreed to strengthen collaboration to enhance the investigation and prosecution of offences that lead to bank failures, while also improving the recovery of assets and debts of failed banks.

This formed the focus of a courtesy visit by the management of the NDIC, led by its Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mr. Thompson Oludare Sunday, to the Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede, in Abuja.

Members of the NDIC delegation included the Executive Director, Corporate Services, Mrs. Emily Osuji; the Executive Director, Operations, Dr. Kabir Katata; and other senior directors.

Gov Yusuf will regret leaving NNPP — Kwankwaso

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and his political associates will eventually regret their decision to leave the party.

Kwankwaso made the assertion during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, monitored by our correspondent in Kaduna on Wednesday, describing the governor’s defection as shocking and difficult to comprehend.
