Tinubu plans replacement as defence minister resigns

President Bola Tinubu is set to name a new Minister of Defence this week following the sudden resignation of the incumbent, Badaru Abubakar, who quit the cabinet on health grounds.

Abubakar’s resignation, which takes immediate effect, was conveyed in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to the President.

The development was announced in a statement issued Monday evening by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.“

In a letter dated December 1, sent to President Bola Tinubu, Abubakar said he was quitting on health grounds,” the statement read.

PDP crisis: Osun gov primary collapses, Kefas embraces APC

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party worsened on Monday as the Osun State chapter announced the cancellation of its scheduled December 2 governorship primary, while one of its prominent governors, Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, met President Bola Tinubu after aligning with the All Progressives Congress.

Announcing the abortion of the primary in Osogbo, the Osun PDP chairman, Mr Sunday Bisi, said the party could no longer proceed with the exercise due to the turmoil at the national level, which has also raised doubts about Governor Ademola Adeleke’s interest in seeking re-election on the PDP platform.

Bisi confirmed that Adeleke fulfilled all party requirements for nomination, noting that he bought and submitted his forms between October 13 and 25, 2025, appeared before the Screening Committee on October 30, and was cleared.

Dollar to Naira exchange rate today, December 2, 2025

The exchange rate between the United States Dollar (USD) and the Nigerian Naira (NGN) showed continued stability across both the official and parallel markets on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

According to real-time data from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the local currency is trading close to the N1,448 per dollar mark, maintaining a narrow gap with the parallel market rates.

NFEM (Official) Market RatesData from the FMDQ Securities Exchange and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) indicates that the Naira opened trading on Tuesday around N1,447.96 per dollar.

This represents a marginal adjustment from the previous trading sessions.Market data shows that the currency has maintained a relatively stable position over the last week.

On Friday, November 28, the NFEM closing rate was recorded at N1,446.90, with a daily high of N1,449.75 and a low of N1,445.00.

Indications from Monday’s trading session (December 1) suggested the rate hovered around N1,446.59, reflecting sustained liquidity and reduced volatility in the official window.

Sowore alleges reason behind Defence Minister’s resignation

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has alleged that President Bola Tinubu ordered Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru Abubakar to step aside, contrary to the official claim that he resigned due to health challenges.

Badaru reportedly tendered his resignation on Monday, citing undisclosed health issues.

However, in a Facebook post, Sowore claimed the minister was compelled to resign to make way for the appointment of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as the new Defence Minister.

Sowore further alleged that the Federal Government is under mounting pressure to also dismiss the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, over what he described as worsening security concerns across the country.

Neither the Presidency nor the Ministry of Defence has officially responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.

The useless Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, did not resign.

He was asked by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step aside to make room for former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa to be appointed Defence Minister.

There are also strong indications that US President Donald Trump’s United States military is pressing for the removal of the equally ineffective and utterly useless Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, citing serious concerns over intelligence sharing and collaboration.

Matawalle is widely accused of having links to bandits in Zamfara!”

Speaker Abbas denies involvement in alleged ₦18.6bn NASC building contract controversy

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has dismissed allegations linking him to the purported mismanagement of ₦18.6 billion allegedly associated with the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) headquarters project.

The allegation, made by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), suggested that the Speaker had questions to answer over funds purportedly tied to the NASC building.

However, in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Abbas described the claims as incorrect and misleading

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Speaker wishes to state unequivocally that he has no involvement, directly or indirectly, in the award, processing, supervision, or payment of any contract within the National Assembly bureaucracy or any of its agencies,” the statement read.

Krishi emphasized that all contractual matters in the National Assembly fall under the administrative bureaucracy, which has its own statutory leadership and procurement processes.

He added that the NASC headquarters project “was conceived, awarded, and contractually executed long before the emergence of the current leadership of the House.

”Nigeria should not be importing fuel, we have capacity to meet local demand — Dangote

President/Chief Executive, Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has criticised the crude supply practices of international oil companies, insisting that Nigeria has no justification for importing crude or refined petroleum products if existing laws are properly enforced.

Speaking during a visit by the South South Development Commission (SSDC) to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Fertiliser Complex in Lagos, Dangote said the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) already establishes a framework that prioritises domestic crude supply.

However, he noted that operators continue to exploit loopholes that undermine the intent of the law.

Dangote stated that several oil companies routinely divert Nigerian crude to their trading subsidiaries abroad, particularly in Switzerland, forcing domestic refineries to buy from these offshore entities at a premium of four to five dollars per barrel.

“The crude is available. It is not a matter of shortage.

But the companies move everything to their trading arms, and we are forced to buy at a premium.

Meanwhile, we do not receive any premium for our own products,” he said.

He disclosed that he has formally written to the Federal Government, urging it to charge royalties and taxes based on the actual price paid for crude, to prevent revenue losses and to discourage practices that disadvantage local refiners.
