Nigerian rapper Ruggedman detained by police over leadership disputes in PMAN, sparking concerns over due process and artists’ rights.
Veteran Nigerian rapper and activist Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, popularly known as Ruggedman, has been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Lagos, in connection with an ongoing leadership dispute within the Performing Musicians Employers’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN).
Human rights advocate Harrison Gwamnishu disclosed the development via his verified social media account on May 22, stating that Ruggedman and others are being held without a proper investigation.
Gwamnishu alleged that the detention was ordered by a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
PMAN, once Nigeria’s foremost platform for protecting the rights of performing artists, has been embroiled in years of internal crises.
In August 2024, Ruggedman, along with other members, was suspended by PMAN’s national executive council over alleged misconduct.
The arrest has sparked outrage among civil rights activists and the entertainment community.
With many condemning what they describe as the increasing use of state power to intimidate voices within Nigeria’s creative industry.
However, as of now, efforts to reach officials of the Lagos State Police Command for comments have been unsuccessful.
The situation continues to develop, with many calling for due process and transparency in handling the matter
