The Labour Party (LP) has officially declared its presidential ticket open for the 2027 general elections, marking a pivotal shift in Nigeria’s opposition politics.
The announcement came after a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday.
They have decided on:
- Open nomination process for all eligible aspirants
- No automatic ticket for 2023 candidate Peter Obi
- New guidelines to ensure transparent primaries
Party Chairman Julius Abure stated: “We’re building a competitive, inclusive process to select Nigeria’s best leader.” This move follows internal reviews of the 2023 elections, where Obi finished third with 6.1 million votes.
Potential contenders already being discussed:
- Peter Obi – 2023 standard-bearer considering re-run
- Pat Utomi – Political economist and LP founding member
- Aisha Yesufu – Activist gaining grassroots traction
The party aims to correct 2023’s logistical shortcomings, including poor agent coordination.
With Nigeria’s political landscape shifting, Labour’s open ticket signals both opportunity and risk. Democracy thrives when choices exist.
