South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has strongly opposed the United States’ decision to impose steep new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from his country, labeling the move “unilateral” and harmful to fair trade.
The criticism follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement that South African metal exports will face 30% tariffs starting August 1, as part of broader protectionist measures.
Ramaphosa emphasized that South Africa remains committed to multilateral trade systems, urging the US to reconsider its stance.
Meanwhile, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) could offer alternative markets for affected industries.
With negotiations ongoing, the disputes show growing global trade tensions and their ripple effects on emerging economies.
