How to Set Boundaries and Still Be Kind

Dehydration is one common heat-related illness that occurs during the heatwave in Nigeria. It occurs when the body loses more fluids than it generally takes in, therefore leading to symptoms like dizziness and dry mouth.

Another heat-related illness to watch out for is Heat exhaustion. This is caused by heavy sweating which can lead to serious health risk if not discovered at the right time.

Heat Stroke is a medical emergency marked by a high body temperature, confusion and loss of consciousness. All these can occur during serious heat waves.

In this article, below are some of the essential tips to include in your day-to-day life during this heat period.

Stay Hydrated

First and foremost, the thing to consider during this period is to make sure you drink plenty of water during the day. Staying hydrated helps to regulate the body temperature and also prevent heat-related illnesses.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is important to drink at least 2-3 litres of water per day during a heat wave.

2.   Wear Light and Loose Clothing

Individuals should ensure to put on light and loose-fitting clothings to help the body stay cool. Do away with dark-coloured clothes as they absorb more heat.

3.  Keep your Living Space Cool

It is essential you provide your living space with fans or air conditions in order to help with the body temperature. This equipment helps to regulate the body temperature and keep the body cool.

It is also important to have cool showers to help the body during the heatwave.

4.  Avoid Direct SunLight

Staying indoors for most part of the day is another essential tip to adhere to during this heatwave. If there is any need to be outdoors, make sure you stay in a provided shade and also take along your sun hat and sunglasses in order to provide yourself protection from direct sunlight.

In conclusion, it is important to know that by following these essential tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of health-related issues during this extreme heat period.
