The lecturers maintain that the Zimbabwe Republic Police reacted excessively to campus demonstrations which limited legitimate academic protest rights.

The legal dispute exposes the ongoing conflict between academic establishments and government control in Zimbabwe regarding their respective abilities to protect freedom of expression on campus.

A final decision in this matter will establish major legal standards regarding student and academic staff rights to protest without facing unlawful or repressive treatment.
