Minister of Home Affairs in Zambia Jack Mwiimbu issued an official promise to the country about maintaining peaceful conditions along with transparency during general elections scheduled for 2026.

The public in Zambia actively expresses doubts about this declaration from Mwiimbu because they consider it an empty promise which disregards fundamental problems facing Zambia’s democratic system.

The critics note that Minister Mwiimbu’s statement fails to address the ongoing political violence which has affected Zambia’s past electoral processes.

The 2021 general election produced numerous reports that showed political party supporters fighting each other while authorities silenced opposition representatives and the voting results were suspected to be fraudulent.

The occurrence of these incidents has caused significant public distrust toward electoral processes while allowing people to doubt whether the government wants to establish a genuinely peaceful and fair democratic atmosphere.

Numerous doubts exist regarding the unbiased performance of state institutions that maintain election oversight responsibilities.

The police force together with the electoral commission have come under scrutiny because people believe they support the ruling party interests instead of striving for independence.

The public’s distrust increases because these perceptions weaken the credibility of election results.

The government’s response to dissent along with restrictions on freedom of expression makes these concerns end up worse.

The government conducted actions that resulted in opposition activists and members receiving harassing treatment and facing detainment along with restricted capabilities for public gathering which has produced a setting of panic and intimidation throughout the nation.

Such an environment obstructs political discussions that are open to the public and prevents citizens from freely participating in democratic functions.

Civil society organizations along with political analysts demand specific steps from Minister Mwiimbu after his assurance.

The group supports extensive electoral transformation through independent electoral commissions and firm political violence laws so the media can operate freely.

The nation demands these measures to achieve public trust as well as performing elections in 2026 which accurately represent the real will of Zambians.

During the forthcoming elections Zambia holds the chance to prove its dedication to democratic values.

Minister Mwiimbu’s assurances to the public seem intended to calm anxieties but his words could be viewed as meaningless statements because the electoral system lacks substantive changes to improve its functioning.

The Zambian government must actively convert its political statements into concrete measures that will both defend democracy’s integrity and win citizens’ faith.
