The flagship Galaxy S25 series from Samsung adopts Google’s Gemini as the main AI assistant while Bixby exits its position as the system’s default voice assistant. The new direction marks a sharp reversal from Samsung’s previous stand which involved maintaining exclusive support for Bixby instead of Google Assistant.
The side button activation of Gemini AI replaces Bixby and the Power Menu choices for Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series including the S25+, and S25 Ultra models. Bixby exists in the devices but users need to activate it manually before they can use its features.
Samsung has seamlessly merged Gemini with its default apps, Samsung Calendar, Notes, and Reminder. Gemini enables users to complete tasks like note addition, alarm management, and reminder creation through voice commands inside Samsung application interfaces.
Although Bixby maintains a lesser presence users have received some new features in its updated version. The assistant gained enhanced contextual processing to remember previous statements and respond better to follow-up questions. Bixby now enhances its calendar event management by using past communication history to create new entries more adeptly.
In the Chinese market, Samsung released an upgraded Bixby system that relies on large language models (LLMs) several months ago. The updated Bixby version provides advanced features and app integration capability although these features remain unavailable globally with the release of One UI 7.0 and the Galaxy S25 across markets.
The company claims to Android Authority that these digital assistants trigger different scenarios according to their designated use cases. Samsung has confirmed Gemini responds to search requests yet Bixby operates as the interface for Samsung app commands. Real-world observations demonstrate that users typically select Gemini as their default assistant because Bixby requires manual command activation or custom button configurations.
Samsung’s tactical course change regarding AI assistants points to an advancing willingness to connect with Google AI systems suggesting an upcoming transformation in the company’s software direction.
