Amazon has announced a massive investment of £40billion in the UK within the next three years.
This growth involves four new robotic fulfilment centres, one of which will be located in the East Midlands, Northampton, and Hull.
There is a fourth site that is yet to be determined.
Every new fulfilment centre will bring about 2,000 jobs and its London development will fit an extra 1,500 employees- with starting pay of about £28,000 per year.
All in all, thousands of new positions in the UK will be available in these facilities.
Refurbishment of Bray Film Studios, which was used on shows such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Citadel, is also part of the plan.
It contains the already announced investment of £8 billion of AWS in UK data centres in response to increasing AI infrastructure demand
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy called this a vote of confidence in the UK economy, saying that operations will increase in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
The sentiment was echoed by labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who referred to it as a “massive vote of confidence in the business environment in Britain”.
Nevertheless, other critics raise issues regarding the labour practices of Amazon.
The investment strengthens the status of the company as one of the ten leading employers in the UK in the private sector, with the current number of employees being 75,000 and increasing.
