Cameroon football encounters new age irregularity suspicions throughout the qualification period for the U-17 AFCON championship

The football community of Cameroon remains in the middle of an age forgery scandal because of events during their U-17 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and previous instances of suspended players who falsified their ages.

During the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Cameroon football has faced new-age fraud suspicions. A 9-0 loss between CAR and Cameroon U-17 generated accusations from the CAR coaching staff about overage players on the opposing team while casting doubt on regional youth sporting integrity.

This incident is not isolated. A total of 32 players from the Cameroon U-17 national team found themselves suspended by FECAFOOT in 2023 after MRI age tests revealed they were over the minimum age.  The sports world in Africa now depends on MRI scans as a required tool to confirm player ages and promote honest competition.

The problem of age fraud presents itself throughout Cameroon and other African nations. Ghana’s U-17 team received a ban from the 2015 African U-17 Championship because of age-cheating incidents which affect multiple nations across the continent.

Competitive integrity suffers severe damage when age cheating continues since it erodes competition trust and makes it impossible for young athletes to develop through fair competition.

FECAFOOT operates under the leadership of President Samuel Eto’o to actively deal with these difficulties. The federation implemented strict measures that resulted in suspending 62 players for falsifying their identity and age information thereby making it the largest African crackdown on age fraud in football history.

The period Eto’o spent in charge of football received major criticisms. FIFA enforced a six-month ban upon him for his bad conduct during Brazil’s Women’s U-20 World Cup match against Cameroon in September of 2024.

The disciplinary action found him guilty of offensive behaviour while violating fair play principles in addition to the current problems faced by Cameroon’s football authority.

During the U-17 AFCON qualifiers, FECAFOOT declared its intention to fight age fraud completely while reaffirming its dedication to eliminating this practice. FECAFOOT has developed strict verification protocols as part of its program to rebuild faith in Cameroonian football alongside international organizations.

The elimination of age fraud exists as an essential step towards developing football both in Cameroon and throughout Africa. The football world waits for decisive measures which will build up dedication to ethical behaviour and fair play standards while investigations about current accusations persist.
