Morocco U-20 coach Ouahbi reflects on AFCON final loss, sets sights on FIFA U-20 World Cup, emphasizing team resilience and future prospects.
Morocco’s U-20 national team coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, has expressed his bewilderment following the team’s 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the final of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.
Despite dominating various aspects of the game, the Atlas Cubs were undone by a solitary goal from Gomolemo Kekana in the 70th minute
“I still don’t understand how we didn’t win this final,” Ouahbi remarked post-match.
“We had the upper hand in every aspect – possession, chances, territory, corner kicks – everything. But somehow the trophy slipped through our fingers.”
Throughout the tournament, Morocco showcased impressive performances, remaining unbeaten in the group stages, edging past Sierra Leone in extra time during the quarter-finals, and defeating hosts Egypt in the semi-finals.
Their campaign was characterized by tactical discipline and attacking flair, with emerging talents like Hossam El Sadek, Othmane Maamma, and Hossam Essadak making significant contributions
Despite the setback, Ouahbi emphasized the importance of resilience and learning from the experience.
“The boys gave everything. Football can be cruel. You dominate, you dictate, you press, and one moment changes everything. But that’s the nature of this sport,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Morocco will participate in the FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled to take place in Chile later this year.
The team aims to build on their AFCON performances and make a significant impact on the global stage.
Ouahbi concluded, “They are heartbroken now, but this experience will make them stronger.
Our focus must now turn to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. We will regroup, learn from this, and represent Morocco with pride”
