Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu has come to the defence of winger Rinsola Babajide, who has played minimal minutes since the group stage, ahead of Nigeria’s crucial WAFCON final against hosts Morocco this Saturday (July 26).
Babajide, known for opening the tournament with a goal and assist in the 3–0 win over Tunisia, hasn’t featured in the knockout rounds and was absent in recent matches against Zambia and South Africa.
Asked about her omission, Madugu stressed the decision was rooted in team dynamics rather than individual merit:
“It’s a team thing, not about an individual. The fact that she has not been on the field does not mean she has not been playing well. She has been instrumental in motivating the squad. She could have a role to play tomorrow.”
Madugu added that Babajide’s attitude, commitment to strategy, and presence in the dressing room fuel the team’s overall morale:
“She has been fully supportive of everything we do…”

This reassurance comes as Nigeria prepares for their bid at a record 10th WAFCON title, facing a resilient Morocco side who advanced via penalties after a 1–1 draw with Ghana.
Nigeria reached the final after a dramatic 2–1 semi-final victory over South Africa, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner from Michelle Alozie.
Madugu remains focused as the knockout stage forces tactical adjustments, insisting every squad member has a purpose-even if not on the pitch.
He stated his intent to stick with the attacking trio-Folashade Ijamilusi, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Esther Okoronkwo that secured their win in Casablanca.
