The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State has firmly rejected proposals for opposition coalitions, declaring the party “big enough to accommodate all political interests” ahead of the 2027 elections.
State Chairman Hon. Adamu Bako stated this position Thursday during the party’s expanded stakeholders’ meeting in Lafia, directly addressing recent merger talks involving Labour Party and NNPP elements.
Key Reasons for Rejection:
- Structural Capacity: PDP maintains 184 wards and 13 LG chapters
- Electoral History: Secured 42% in 2023 guber race despite APC victory
- Growing Membership: 18,000 new members registered since March 2025
Bako emphasized: “We welcome individuals, not mergers that dilute our identity.”
The stance contrasts with PDP chapters in Kano and Kaduna actively pursuing coalition strategies.
The party unveiled a 3-point 2027 strategy:
- Youth Mobilization – Targeting 500,000 new voters under 35
- Farmers’ Alliance – Leveraging ongoing fertilizer subsidy discontent
- Digital Campaigns – Countering APC’s social media dominance
Governor Abdullahi Sule’s administration faces rising criticism over unpaid civil servant salaries and stalled projects – vulnerabilities PDP aims to exploit.
As Nigeria’s opposition navigates coalition dilemmas, Nasarawa PDP’s go-it-alone confidence signals intriguing regional variations in pre-election tactics. Whether this independence yields dividends will become clearer as campaigns intensify.
