Senate confirms ex-CDS Musa as defence minister after five-hour screening

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of a former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence following a rigorous five-hour screening by lawmakers.

During the confirmation hearing, Musa faced tough questions on recent security lapses, including the withdrawal of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, shortly before the abduction of schoolgirls on November 17.

The incident sparked national outrage.

Musa assured the Senate that he would immediately set up a full-scale investigation into the troop withdrawal once he assumes office.

I’ll help free Kanu if Biafra radio, sit-at-home end — Satguru Maharaj

The founder of One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has vowed to get the incarcerated leader of the proscribed Igbo group, Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, released if the Biafra radio and sit-at-home order are stopped.

Maharaj Ji stated this while speaking in an interview granted to his temple’s in-house radio on Wednesday.

According to him, the IPOB leader was culpable of the terrorism charges levelled against him, and anyone guilty is liable to a death sentence.

He said,

“We are, however, grateful that the matter has been put on hold in the sense that, by the accusations, it is always going to be death, looking at the level of crimes attached to him, with the way and manner the constitution is written.

Anybody who is accused of doing such a thing (terrorism) is sentenced to death. It is only out of grace that Kanu was able to escape.

No rift with Akpabio, I’m only performing my duties — Senator Goje

Senator Danjuma Goje, representing Gombe Central, has clarified that there was no rift between him and Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s rowdy session, describing the incident as a routine parliamentary procedure.

Goje offered the clarification during Wednesday’s plenary, a day after he confronted Akpabio over what he called an “unparliamentary act” during proceedings.

The senator, who had raised a point of order citing procedural rules, said his actions were misinterpreted by sections of the media.

“My intention in calling that order was not to go against the Senate President personally or to fight him,” Goje said.

“The idea is to contribute my quota as an experienced parliamentarian to ensure that the Senate follows the rules.

There is nothing personal against the Senate President or any senator.”

CBN announces new withdrawal limit, removes deposit cap

The Central Bank of Nigeria has announced a comprehensive revision of cash-related policies, introducing new nationwide withdrawal limits and scrapping the cumulative deposit cap for bank customers.

In the circular signed by the Director, Financial Policy & Regulation Department, Dr. Rita I. Sike, on December 2nd, 2025, the apex bank said the policy overhaul was necessary to reduce the rising cost of cash management, strengthen security around cash movement, and curb money laundering risks in an economy still heavily reliant on physical currency.

According to the apex bank, earlier cash policies were introduced to manage changing economic conditions.

It noted that the time had come to adjust those rules to meet current realities.

The CBN said the cumulative cash deposit limit has been fully removed, and banks will no longer charge customers fees for deposits exceeding previously set thresholds.

The move is expected to encourage more deposits and expand liquidity within the financial system.

INEC decries low PVC collection in Plateau

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Plateau State has expressed concern over the low turnout of registered voters collecting their Permanent Voters’ Cards in the state.

Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mohammed Sadiq, lamented the situation at a stakeholders’ meeting held in Jos, the state capital, on Wednesday, saying it was disappointing that many registered voters had not collected their PVCs despite widespread sensitization efforts.

Sadiq noted that the commission had made significant efforts to ensure that PVCs were available for collection, but many voters had yet to take advantage of the opportunity.

He said,

“We keep on mentioning to the good people of Plateau State that the owners of the over 101,000 PVCs should come over because it will surprise you that in the last three months, only 1,004 out of over 101,000 came and picked their voters’ cards, which represents a 0.09% collection.

That means that even one percent collection, we have not reached in Plateau.”

Ex-CDS Musa advocates comprehensive national database to the Senate

The newly confirmed Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), while undergoing screening for the position before the Senate on Wednesday, called for a comprehensive national database and tracking of ransom payments to apprehend criminals.

PUNCH reports that Musa was confirmed as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence following a rigorous five-hour screening by lawmakers.

While speaking during the screening, the former Chief of Defence Staff argued that Nigeria must emulate successful developed nations by implementing a simple, fundamental security infrastructure.

“If we look at first-world countries, why are they succeeding? They’ve been able to put some basic things in place.

Something as simple as a database for all citizens.

Edo to raise N160bn to tackle ecological problems

The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Ecological Fund and Management Commission, Blessing Agbomhere, has unveiled plans by the state government to raise N160 billion to tackle ecological challenges in the state.

Agbomhere, who stated this at a press parley on Wednesday, said the fund would be raised through the Ecological/Climate Trust.

He also revealed that the Okpebholo Green Revolution for Edo would be launched next week.

He said the state opted to raise funds because its three-year budget would not be enough to remediate gully erosion sites across the state.

Rubio vows visa bans over ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday the United States would restrict visas over persecution of Christians in Nigeria, where President Donald Trump has threatened military action.

The United States already restricts visas for human rights abuses and Trump has sharply curtailed visas in general, especially for people from developing countries.

Rubio in a statement said the United States would restrict issuing visas to people who “have directed, authorized, significantly supported, participated in or carried out violations of religious freedom.
