Popular Ghanaian actor and social commentator Kwaku Manu has ignited a fiery public debate after alleging that sexual pleasure devices are causing physical harm to women.
The outspoken celebrity claimed these products are “destroying women’s vaginas” and called for greater public education about potential risks.
Medical professionals have responded with mixed reactions to Manu’s claims.
While gynecologist Dr. Ama Nyarko acknowledges that improper use of adult toys could potentially cause micro-tears or infections, she emphasized that “when used correctly with proper hygiene, quality sex toys pose minimal health risks.”
The Ghana Medical Association has yet to issue an official position on the matter.
The controversy has divided social media, with some users applauding Manu for addressing a taboo subject, while others accuse him of spreading misinformation.
Feminist groups have particularly criticized his framing, arguing it perpetuates stigma around female sexuality.
“This isn’t about protection – it’s about controlling women’s bodies and pleasure,” stated Women’s Rights Foundation director Abena Asare.
Adult shop owners in Accra report both increased curiosity and concern among customers.
Industry experts note the growing but unregulated market for intimate products in Ghana, where such items remain culturally sensitive despite increasing availability.
