South Africa Leads Nigeria on Grammy Night, They Go Again On Wednesday

A huge win for South Africa on the night as Tyla becomes the first awardee of the new category for African music, “Best African Music Performance”

She won the award category for her undeniable hit song that has an unforgettable catchy hook which shook the global space. The hook goes thus;

However, it would be an unforgettable night for Nigerians as she won this award at the expense of 4 Nigerian artists nominated in that category; Ayra Starr (Rush) Burna Boy (City Boy) Davido (Unavailable) Asake & Olamide (Amapiano).

While receiving the award, the 22-year-old looked stunned and very happy as she thanked God and also gave shout-outs to her team and the recording academy.

Mixed reactions floored the X app as Most Nigerians were not happy as she beat their fellow citizens to it. They were dazed, heartbroken and shocked.

Others congratulated her but still sought revenge on South Africans when the two countries face in the 2023 AFCON semi-final. If you ask me, I would say, South Africans have drawn the first blood with Tyla’s win.

Nigeria also had something to take home as their superstar Burna Boy, enthralled the audience with his magnificent performance on the night.

However, Nigerian singer Billy O, bashed the Recording Academy members for not showing appreciation to the Afrobeats genre, as Nigerian artists that got nominated 10 times didn’t win any.

Despite dominating in Africa, I think we are not really well appreciated when it comes to Grammys,”

Billy O

In a spirit of honorableness, two of the Nigerian Nominees in that category, Davido and Ayra Starr took to their X accounts to congratulate the 22-year-old. The messages from them said “Keep soaring” and “Congratulations to my babessssss”

Another one for the South Africans as one of the best comedians, Trevor Noah, a South African, hosted the award show for the fourth time.
