Meta-owned WhatsApp implemented a major crackdown in 2025: over 6.8 million accounts tied to scam networks were permanently banned.
These operations, often based in Southeast Asia, ran crypto frauds, pyramid schemes, and fake investment offers that demanded upfront payments from victims.
To strengthen user protections, WhatsApp is launching two key UI updates:
- A group safety overview that appears when an unknown contact adds you to a group. It shows details like the group creator, member count, and alerts to potential scams. You can exit without opening the chat.
- For one-on-one conversations with unknown contacts, WhatsApp may show context to help you pause and assess legitimacy before responding
In a joint enforcement with OpenAI, WhatsApp helped dismantle a scam operation in Cambodia. Scammers used ChatGPT to seed messages that led users to group chats and then redirected them to platforms like Telegram or TikTok as part of pyramid-style crypto and rent-a-scooter scams
With billions lost yearly to internet fraud, and scams growing more sophisticated, these tools aim to give users clear warning and control at critical touchpoints before engagement.
