Ghanaian music duo DopeNation has advised emerging artistes to approach record label deals with caution, arguing that “record labels can help…but they are not for everyone.”

In an interview with Joy Prime, the twins (Michael and Tony Boafo) said many upcoming artistes rush into signing contracts without understanding the business side of the music industry , and eventually feel trapped.

“Labels are good. They have the structure, the money, and the distribution. But not everybody needs to be signed,” Michael said.

“Sometimes you are better off building your own brand first and partnering later when you have value to offer.”

The pair added that musicians need to educate themselves about publishing, royalties, and ownership before agreeing to any deal.

They also stressed that artists with strong fan bases and digital traction can succeed independently if they structure their careers properly.

This is not the first time DopeNation has spoken about the pitfalls of the music business. In 2021, they advised young acts to avoid “slavery contracts” and instead focus on owning their work.

Their latest comments come at a time when several African artists , including Fido, Yarden, and Portable have publicly complained about unfair label agreements and revenue exploitation.
