The Nigerian Defence Headquarters reports significant victories against terrorism, neutralizing 156 terrorists and rescuing 181 hostages, while addressing challenges from an influx of foreign fighters from the Sahel region.
The Nigerian Armed Forces recently provided extensive information on the overall counter-terrorism campaign progress; while noting that terrorist activities have intensified particularly from foreign fighters who are infiltrating through the Sahel corridor.
DDMO took the floor, and Brigadier-General Edward Buba provided the audience with an insight into the latest military operations that targeted and continued re-strategising against terror resurgence in the North-West and South-Eastern regions of the country.
The recent operations have been quite fruitful the forces have been successful in neutralizing 156 terrorists and have arrested 464 suspects.
The military also managed to rescue 181 hostage-takers who had been kidnapped in an important show of force humanitarian military relief. The operations also resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of weapons such as 68 AK-47 rifles, 7 RPG bombs, and 9 IEDs, besides other kinds of ammunition.
To equally counter the increasing problem of the terrorists employing foreigners in their acts, Maj-Gen. Buba called on the military to further renew its commitment in the process of degrading the enemy’s morale. ”As we are aware, there are normally moments of tactical reverse which are not strange to any theatre of war but our strategic course is clear and has not been disrupted,” he said.
In other words, the military boasts a record of working not only in counter-terrorism operations. In the Southeast zone, there was a success in demobilizing oil bunkering activities to deny unlawful procurement of crude oil worth about 623.4 million Naira. This complex approach to protecting a nation and its citizens involves the recent confiscation of vehicles, motorcycles, and communication gear used by terrorists.
Speaking about on the perception to security threats with a specific reference to the political perspective Buba pointed out that the security zone emphasizes that it is the public mandate, “Security is everyone business.” He urged them to be more alert and assist security forces by reporting any act of suspicion.
The Nigerian Armed Forces continue to pledge its commitment to fulfilling its duty of paying the supreme price by continuing the fight to guarantee order in the nation.
Therefore, different tactics are being employed by the military despite the difficult times occasioned by the influx of foreign fighters hence the military will continue to press on with counter-terrorism mechanisms to make sure that Nigeria remains safe for everyone.
