Last Mile Project receives KSh 10.3 billion to expand electricity access in Mt. Kenya, enhancing development and livelihoods.

Last Mile Project has been allocated KSh 10.3 billion by the Kenyan government to enhance electricity connectivity in the Mt. Kenya region.

This initiative is a significant step towards achieving universal electricity access under Vision 2030.

It also aligns with President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira announced the funding during a visit to Kilimambogo in Thika East.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to extending electricity access across the country.

This allocation is part of a broader KSh 42 billion Last Mile Electricity Program aimed at delivering affordable power to underserved communities.

Kiambu County has received a substantial allocation of KSh 490 million under this initiative.

This funding will enable hundreds of households and small businesses to connect to the national grid.

The program is expected to boost economic activity, improve security, and drive development in areas such as Thika East.

At the launch event in Matathia Village, Dr. Rose Mkalama, CEO of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), urged residents to protect the newly installed transformers from vandalism.

She also warned the community against individuals demanding payment for electricity connections, emphasizing that the government is offering the service at no cost.

Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a praised the initiative, noting that more than 1,750 families in her constituency stand to benefit.

She highlighted that the project would significantly support local youth and small traders by providing the necessary infrastructure for economic growth.

Residents welcomed the development with enthusiasm, expressing confidence that the new electricity connections would enhance their livelihoods and create new opportunities for employment and enterprise.

The Last Mile Connectivity Project remains a key component of Kenya’s long-term development strategy.

It demonstrates the government’s commitment to empowering communities from the grassroots level through strategic infrastructure and service delivery.
