The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially launched its Benue State chapter, marking a strategic expansion ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The opposition party’s move targets the pivotal North-Central region where voter dissatisfaction with major parties grows.
National Chairman Ralphs Okey Nwosu inaugurated the Makurdi office Saturday, declaring: “Benue deserves leaders who prioritize development over ethnicity.”
The ceremony attracted defectors from the PDP and APC, including former state assembly member Hon. Terhemen Tarzoor.
ADC’s Benue chairman Dr. John Enemari outlined three priorities:
- Security solutions for farming communities
- Youth employment through agro-industries
- Infrastructure development for rural areas
The launch comes amid Nigeria’s evolving opposition landscape. ADC, which secured 0.8% in 2023’s presidential race, now courts smaller parties for potential coalitions.
Recent polls show 62% of Benue residents want alternative options beyond APC and PDP.
State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia (APC) downplayed the threat: “Benue remains progressive territory.” However, ADC’s focus on local issues – especially farmer welfare – could disrupt traditional voting patterns.
With 30 months until elections, ADC’s grassroots approach mirrors successful third-party strategies in Osun and Oyo.
