Algeria Bets Big on Renewable Energy with Ambitious Green Hydrogen Plan

North African nation aims to transform its oil-dependent economy with 15GW clean energy push by 2035

Algeria unveils sweeping renewable energy strategy, targeting green hydrogen exports and solar expansion to diversify beyond fossil fuels.

Algeria is pivoting aggressively toward renewable energy, announcing plans to develop 15 gigawatts of clean power capacity by 2035.

The strategy focuses on solar farms and green hydrogen production in the Sahara Desert.


Minister of Energy Mohamed Arkab introduced the energy blueprint during Algiers Energy Summit which includes ten GW of solar photovoltaic initiatives together with four GW of wind energy projects and one GW of green hydrogen electrolyzer capabilities.

Algeria has established its most extensive clean energy plan to date through this comprehensive strategy.

The decreasing European gas consumption pushes Algeria to transition toward renewable energy because its economy heavily depends on oil and gas exports.

Through transition funding worth €2 billion the EU provides financial support for North Africa’s energy sector evolution.

The Algerian government aims to establish green hydrogen export routes to Germany and Italy by 2030 according to Arkab during his speech at the summit.

Hassi R’Mel gas fields in 2026 will host initial pilot experiments because they use existing facilities to support the emerging new energy sector.

The country benefits from superior solar conditions and flexible gas networks for hydrogen transportation along with its close distance to European markets situated 300km away.

The combination of favorable conditions allows Algeria to establish leadership in the developing green energy industry.

The implementation of green energy faces obstacles related to electrolysis water requirements in arid territories while dealing with Moroccan renewable energy dominance as well as foreign technology acquisition challenges.

Specialized training centers and strategic European partnerships will be used by the government to overcome these obstacles according to its plan.

Multiple feasibility studies between German and Italian energy corporations have started as the companies signed multiple memorandums of understanding throughout the summit.

The successful implementation of Algeria’s energy transition will transform its economy by keeping essential oil revenue intact until the transition completes its course toward establishing North Africa’s leading position in clean energy.
