Donald Trump says Xi Jinping called him, asserting that the two nations are engaged in tariff negotiations.
In a recent interview with Time magazine, President Trump stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping had initiated contact, suggesting progress in resolving the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and China.
Trump claimed, “He’s called. And I don’t think that’s a sign of weakness on his behalf.”
However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry refuted these claims, with spokesperson Guo Jiakun stating, “China and the US are not having any consultation or negotiation on tariffs.”
Guo further urged the United States to “stop creating confusion.”
Despite the lack of official negotiations, China has quietly exempted certain U.S. goods from its steep import levies, indicating a potential easing of trade tensions.
President Trump also mentioned that the U.S. has made 200 trade deals, expecting them to be finalized within three to four weeks.
He likened the U.S. to a department store, stating, “I am this giant store… and I set prices, and I’ll say, if you want to shop here, this is what you have to pay.”
This exchange underscores the ongoing complexities in U.S.-China trade relations, with both nations navigating a path toward potential resolution amidst conflicting narratives.
