Here’s how to keep them fresh for longer without a fridge.

1. How to Store Yam

Keep yams in a cool, dry, and dark place.

Yams rot fast when exposed to moisture or sunlight.

Place them in a basket or on a shelf.

Avoid plastic bags because they trap moisture and cause rotting.

Don’t wash yams before storing, keep them dry.

If a yam is already cut, cover the cut part with cling film and store in a cool place.

Use it within 2 to 3 days.

Avoid stacking too many yams to prevent bruising.

2. How to Store Plantain

Plantains ripen quickly, especially in hot weather.

To slow ripening and keep them green, wrap each plantain in newspaper or dry banana leaves.

Store in a cool, dry place with good airflow.

Do not expose to sunlight or heat.

If you want them to ripen faster, place them in a black plastic bag or wrap in cloth and keep in a warm place for 2 to 3 days.

Never store green plantain in the fridge.

It will go bad inside and stay hard outside.

3. How to Store Potatoes

Potatoes are best stored in the dark.

Keep them in a basket, sack, or carton lined with paper.

Avoid plastic bags, they trap moisture and cause rot.

Store in a dry place away from onions, as onions release gases that make potatoes spoil faster.

If a potato starts sprouting, remove the sprouts and use it soon.

Do not eat potatoes that smell bad or have turned green under the skin.

General Storage Tips

Check your stored food regularly and remove any spoilt ones to stop the spread.

Do not mix yams, plantains, and potatoes in the same storage space.

Always keep them away from water, as moisture is the main reason these foods go bad.

Conclusion: How to Store Yam, Plantain, and Potatoes Properly

You don’t need a fridge to store yam, plantain, or potatoes properly.

With simple tricks like using newspaper, baskets, and dry spaces, you can keep these foods fresh longer.

This helps you avoid waste, save money, and enjoy your meals anytime.
