Kenya’s capital, Nairobi has erupted into violent clashes between police and protesters opposing the government’s controversial finance bill.
Riot officers deployed tear gas and water cannons Thursday as thousands breached parliament barricades in the most severe demonstrations since the bill’s passage.
The unrest began after lawmakers approved new taxes despite widespread public opposition.
Protesters set fires near government buildings as police responded with rubber bullets. Local hospitals report treating over 80 injuries, including several journalists covering the events.
President William Ruto called for calm in a televised address but defended the bill as necessary for debt reduction.
“We must make difficult choices for economic stability,” he stated, sparking further outrage.
Human rights groups condemn the police response.
Amnesty Kenya documented multiple instances of excessive force against unarmed protesters.
Officers reportedly arrested over 200 demonstrators, including organizers from the #RejectFinanceBill movement.
