The M23 rebels conducted a major resource seizure by taking more than 10 tons of strategic minerals from a processing plant located in South Kivu province in Congo.

A major exporter of 3T minerals known as tin tungsten and coltan experienced an incident of looting at ‘CJX Minerals’ processing facility on February 19-20 during the night of 2025.

The Thematic Working Group on Mining and Hydrocarbons of the Civil Society of South Kivu stated that M23 fighters who seized the minerals damaged surveillance equipment after kidnapping security officials once the minerals reached export readiness.

The targeted looting reveals the M23 group’s strategic goal to damage the local economy which they reportedly accomplished through support from Rwanda and its efforts to exploit DRC’s natural resources.

The M23 rebel organization faces severe criticism on the international stage. The United Nations Security Council plans to invoke a resolution that demands Rwanda to remove its military involvement from eastern DRC and end backing for M23 rebel groups.

The proposed draft resolution from France specifically targets the M23’s expansion in North and South Kivu while demanding that they stop fighting at once.

DRC President Félix Tshisekedi introduced the initiative to create a unity government that will tackle the escalating problems affecting the eastern provinces. The M23 rebel takeover of resource-rich areas worsened the conflict in DRC while creating serious doubts regarding the stability of the region and economic extraction in those territories.

Armed groups such as M23 use looted strategic minerals to worsen humanitarian problems thus forcing local populations to leave their homes and destroying their ways of earning money.

The situation reveals a complex relationship between warfare and resource plunder in the DRC which needs multilateral cooperation to solve both the security and economic aspects of this crisis.

The international community keeps observing the Democratic Republic of Congo’s continuing work to achieve both peace restoration and resource sovereignty plus solutions for core conflict causes.
