In a significant diplomatic engagement, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is set to join regional leaders in Accra for a momentous occasion in Ghana’s political landscape. The President will depart Abuja on January 6, 2025, to attend the inauguration ceremony of his long-time friend and returning President-elect, John Mahama.

The event, scheduled for January 7, 2025, marks a remarkable comeback for Mahama, who previously led Ghana from 2011 to 2017. His recent victory in the December 2024 elections has paved the way for his return to the prestigious Jubilee House, Ghana’s seat of government, where he will succeed outgoing President Nana Akuffo-Addo.

Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga revealed that the Nigerian delegation will feature prominent figures, including Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, highlighting the importance Nigeria places on this transition of power.

The visit follows Mahama’s earlier diplomatic gesture in December, when he personally extended the inauguration invitation during a visit to Abuja.

This high-profile attendance goes beyond mere diplomatic protocol. The personal friendship between Tinubu and Mahama mirrors the deeper historical ties between their nations, exemplifying the strong bond between Africa’s largest economy and one of its most stable democracies.

Their relationship represents a continuation of the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and Ghana, two nations that have consistently played pivotal roles in shaping West African politics and economics.

The inauguration not only symbolizes Ghana’s commitment to democratic principles but also serves as a platform for reinforcing regional cooperation and solidarity among West African nations.
