Awujale stool: Ruling house members protest exclusion from selection process
Some members of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, the family entitled to the vacant stool of the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, have protested exclusion from the selection process of the about 95 candidates jostling for the position.
In a now-trending video, the protesting members alleged that there is bias in the nomination meeting held at Bisrod Hall, GRA, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Monday.
The nomination meeting was presided over by the Chairman of the ruling house, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi; his deputy, Prince Adedokun Ajidagba; and the Vice Chairman, Prof. Fassy Yusuf.
The Secretary to the Ijebu Ode Local Government, Abiodun Oke, and some other local government officials were present as observers.
Protesting the process with some members at the venue, one Prince Adeyemo Oduneye said some people came together to hijack their family house by denying them the privilege of gaining access into the venue and issued access cards only to those they wanted there.
He said,
“If they had brought a law from the Fusengbuwa ruling house that all members of the family need to have an access card before attending a meeting, it would be understandable.
ADC faction woos Jonathan, Saraki, Makinde in fresh expansion drive
The African Democratic Congress has stepped up efforts to expand its political base ahead of the 2027 general election, calling on former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other prominent political figures to join the party.
The appeal followed the inauguration of the party’s North-East Zonal Congress Committee, which the ADC said marked a renewed push to strengthen its internal structures, promote internal democracy, and reposition the party for national leadership.
ADC factional National Chairman, Nafiu Gombe, disclosed this in a communiqué issued on Tuesday after the inauguration ceremony held in Gombe State on January 11.
The event, organised by the party’s national leadership, was presided over by Dr Muhammad Muhammad.
Ogun court denies Portable bail after arraignment
Controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was on Monday arraigned before the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, over criminal charges including assault and resisting arrest.
Confirming the development to our correspondent, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Portable was arrested and arraigned in Ota on Monday.
“Yes, he was arraigned and remanded yesterday,” Babaseyi said on Tuesday.
Portable’s arraignment followed a viral video that surfaced on Sunday showing him in handcuffs, shirtless and tearfully pleading while seated on a couch in what appeared to be a police holding area.
His arrest reportedly followed allegations of assault against actress and skit maker Omobolarinde Akinyanju, better known as Ashabi Simple, who is one of the musician’s baby mamas and the mother of two of his children.
In court, Vanguard reported that the prosecution alleged that the Zazu crooner attacked Ashabi, alongside some police officers and other individuals, at his bar in the Iyana Ilogbo area on New Year’s Day.
Other alleged victims named in the charge sheet include Ileyemi Damilola, Akinyanju Oluwabusayomi, Olowu Olumide, Demilade Ogunniyi and Ebuka Odah.
Police foil planned kidnap, recover arms in Delta
The Delta State Police Command has foiled a planned kidnap operation and recovered firearms and ammunition following a covert operation by its Special Assignment Team.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, the command said operatives of the CP Special Assignment Team, acting on credible intelligence, stormed a suspected criminal hideout along a bush path in the Upper Agbarho area of the state.
According to the statement, intelligence reports indicated that about six suspected kidnappers were sighted in the area, prompting a coordinated operation at about 9:35 p.m. on January 11, 2026.
It was stated that the operation was led by Julius Robinson in collaboration with community vigilantes.
APC says reclaiming Oyo in 2027 no longer in doubt
The All Progressives Congress has said that reclaiming Oyo State in 2027 is no longer in doubt, citing what it described as the people’s growing love for the party.
Senator Teslim Folarin, a former Senate Leader and Oyo State Ambassador for the Renewed Hope initiative, stated this in Ibadan on Tuesday.
Folarin spoke in Ibadan North Federal Constituency during the grand finale of the 14-Federal-Constituency Tour organised by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors.
According to him, the APC in Oyo State is now united and repositioned to take over the state government and ensure the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027
Tinubu condoles with Ogun govt over passing of Lucia Onabanjo
President Bola Tinubu has commiserated with the government and people of Ogun state over the passing of the former first lady and matriarch of the Onabanjo family, Chief Lucia Onabanjo.Lucia Onabanjo passed away at 101 years old on Monday, January 12.
The President sympathised with the family, friends, and associates of the late wife of the first civilian governor of Ogun State, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo.
President Tinubu noted the compassionate investments of the matriarch in many lives in her community, the state, and the nation, as evidenced by the outpouring of testimonies during her lifetime and after she passed.
“Lucia Onabanjo’s strong support for her husband when he served as Ogun State Governor for four years, 1979-1983, was commendable, and her keen interest in issues of children and empowerment of women was exemplary, Tinubu said.
Mastermind of Edo protest based in Russia – Okpebholo
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has accused an unnamed Russia-based Nigerian as the mastermind behind the protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state, last Saturday.
Recall that following the spate of kidnappings in Ekpoma and neighbouring communities, residents and students of Ambrose Alli University, AAU, took to the streets in protest.
Security agents got involved, and some of the protesters were arrested, taken to court and detained. An outcry followed.
Reacting in a statement on Tuesday, the governor said:
“The incident was not a protest, but a well organised riot sponsored by a Nigerian resident in Russia, and other locations overseas.
Demolition: Jakande Estate residents stage protest at Lagos Assembly
Residents of Jakande Estate, Ilesan in Lagos State, on Tuesday, staged a peaceful protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex against what they called moves to further demolish their homes by the state government.
Leading the protesters, Alhaji Abdulhameed Shuaib, appealed to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to stop further demolition activities, respect court injunction and ensure a fair and transparent resolution of the matter.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “Demolition without adequate compensation is injustice,” “Please stop forceful eviction,” and “No compensation, no demolition @ Jakande Estate Ilesan.”
According to him, their request that compensation must reflect the true value of homes if demolition is inevitable is fair.
He explained that the dispute began in 2025 when residents were informed that they would be driven out of the estate and offered compensation.
