Symposium and Local Tech Showcase on Grassroots Data for National Development

The Symposium and Local Tech Showcase with the theme “Grassroots Data for National Development,” held on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023, at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, was a significant event that brought together key stakeholders in Information Technology and local governance.

The event began with a warm welcome extended by Mr. Mohammed Sikiru Shehu, who also served as the former registrar of CPN(Computer Professionals Registration Council) and is currently the managing consultant of KlearKonsult Ltd. He acknowledged the esteemed presence of His Royal Highness Oba Adekunle Sulaimon Bamgbade, the Olofin of Isheri, Adimula of all Awori Kingdoms, and Hon. Kamal Bayewu, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Lagos State, who served as the Chief Host. Dr. Muhammad Sirajo Aliyu, the incoming President of the Nigeria Computer Society, was the keynote speaker. Mr. Abdulfattah Odusanya and Mr. Tokunbo Smith acted as discussants.

The symposium’s theme, focusing on grassroots data management, was deemed highly relevant. Mr. Shehu praised Lagos State’s initiative to establish ICT Units in local governments, emphasizing that reliable, up-to-date data collection is vital for sustainable national development. He called for greater support and empowerment of local governments.

The Local Tech Showcase featured startups with innovative solutions related to data gathering, management, archiving, and the digital economy. Pitches were made, and the winner received recommendations and technical partnerships with BCLG.

In conclusion, Mr. Mohammed Sikiru Shehu expressed his sincere appreciation to all participants, believing that their presence enriched the symposium. He officially declared the symposium and local tech showcase event open.

The Symposium and Local Tech Showcase provided a platform for critical discussions on harnessing grassroots data for national development and showcased the innovative potential of local startups in this endeavor. It was a significant step towards leveraging technology for sustainable progress at the local government level and beyond.
