Tanzania ranks among global leaders for affordable internet access in 2025.
Tanzania has secured its position as one of the world’s leaders in affordable internet access, according to a newly released global connectivity report.
The 2025 Affordability Index ranks the East African nation among the top performers for cost-effective digital access, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey.
The comprehensive study evaluated internet pricing structures, network reliability, and government policies across 150 countries.
Tanzania’s ranking reflects its successful implementation of strategic initiatives to reduce connectivity costs while expanding infrastructure nationwide.
This achievement follows concerted efforts by both public and private sector stakeholders, including the government’s “Digital Tanzania” initiative which reduced taxes on internet-enabled devices by 30%.
Telecom operators have expanded 4G coverage to 85% of populated areas, with 5G networks now serving all major urban centers at competitive rates.
Communications Minister Hon. Sarah Kamaji emphasized the government’s commitment, stating: “Our vision is to make Tanzania a fully digital society by 2030. This recognition validates our approach of combining infrastructure development with affordability measures.”
The improved internet accessibility is driving tangible benefits across sectors, with e-commerce platforms reporting 200% growth in rural merchant registrations and mobile money transactions increasing by 65% year-over-year.
Additionally, 78% of public schools now incorporate digital learning tools, while telemedicine services reach 60% more patients than in 2024.
With plans to implement subsidized internet packages for low-income households, free public WiFi in all municipal areas, and enhanced digital literacy programs, Tanzania aims to maintain its leadership position while ensuring no citizen gets left behind in the digital revolution.
Tech entrepreneur Jamal Mwinyi noted: “The affordability of internet has been a game-changer.
Small businesses like mine can now compete in regional markets with minimal overhead costs.”
