Tanzanian MP Joseph Musukuma claims Tanzania surpasses Kenya in every way and urges harsh punishment for deported activists.
Tanzanian MP Kenya controversy erupted after Joseph Kasheku Musukuma, a ruling party lawmaker from Geita, made bold claims asserting Tanzania’s superiority over neighboring Kenya.
Speaking during a recent address, Musukuma declared that “Tanzania is better than Kenya in everything,” stirring diplomatic tension between the East African nations.
His comments come amid heightened political sensitivities following the deportation of 36 Ugandan activists from Kenya.
Musukuma added to the controversy by stating that the deported individuals, who are now facing terrorism-related charges in Uganda, should have been jailed in Tanzania and subjected to hard labor.
The activists, allegedly affiliated with Uganda’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), were arrested in Kisumu, Kenya, before being returned to Uganda where authorities claimed they were in Kenya for terrorism training—an accusation they deny.
Musukuma’s remarks have drawn backlash from regional observers who warn such rhetoric can damage longstanding bilateral relations.
Kenya and Tanzania have shared a complex relationship marked by both cooperation and occasional friction, often fueled by political and economic competition.
In recent years, border disputes, trade disagreements, and differing political ideologies have tested ties between the two countries.
Analysts now fear that provocative statements like Musukuma’s could inflame tensions just as the East African Community pushes for deeper regional integration.
Calls for diplomatic maturity and mutual respect are growing louder.
Regional leaders are urged to engage constructively and refrain from inflammatory remarks that could hinder unity and peace across East Africa.
