INEC voter registration will begin nationwide on August 18, the commission announced yesterday. The exercise prepares for the 2027 general elections and aims to enroll new voters.
Chairman Mahmood Yakubu stated the INEC voter registration will run for 12 weeks. “All eligible Nigerians aged 18+ should participate,” he urged during the Abuja briefing.
The process will feature:
- 7,000 registration centers nationwide
- New biometric technology to prevent duplicates
- Special arrangements for IDPs and students
Citizens need:
1) Original birth certificate or age declaration
2) Valid ID (NIN, passport, or driver’s license)
3) Proof of residence
INEC plans enhanced security at all locations. “We’re collaborating with security agencies,” Yakubu assured, referencing past challenges.
Political parties welcomed the timeline. “Early preparation ensures better elections,” said APC spokesman Felix Morka. Civil society groups will monitor the exercise.
The 2027 registration differs from previous exercises by:
- Online pre-registration option
- Weekend operations in select locations
- Real-time data verification
First-time voters like university student Amina Bello expressed enthusiasm. “This is my chance to participate,” she told BusinessDay.
The commission budgeted ₦89 billion for the exercise. Observers suggest adequate funding will determine its success.
The commission promises regular updates through its website and state offices.
